Forensic psychiatry is a subspecialty of medicine focusing on the interface between psychiatry and the legal system. Forensic psychiatrists offer assistance to judges and attorneys by addressing issues related to mental health that arise during legal cases. This may involve evaluating one or more individuals in a court case, providing the court with information pertaining to mental illness, helping attorneys review their clients mental health history, or testifying on mental health issues as an expert witness. Forensic psychiatrists offer a variety of services in both criminal and civil legal cases. These include but are not limited to Competency Evaluations, Criminal Responsibility Evaluations, Child Custody Evaluations, Independent Medical Evaluations, and Personal Injury/Psychiatric Harm Evaluations.
